As seen in the tweets below, a bunch of file names point toward a New Year’s Eve event taking place live in Fortnite on December 31, 2018. For instance, there’s a reference to a New Year countdown timer, some fireworks and spotlights for celebration, and even a Disco Ball that will act as a stand in for the annual dropping of the New York City Times Square Ball. What’s more is that there will be NYE-themed wraps, and someone even managed to catch a glitch in the game during Replay Mode showing where the New Year’s Eve ball will drop from the sky.

For those who haven’t been keeping up with the ongoing development of Fortnite, Epic is no stranger to hosting live events in-game, be they in relation to various holidays or to the title’s content cycle rolling over to a new season. As it so happens, one of the most highly anticipated and beloved moments in the game took place earlier this year when Fortnite players were able to be a part of a shared experience as several missiles launched into the sky in real time.

Taking all of this into consideration, with Fortnite being updated on a regular basis and observing various holidays, it should come as no surprise that a New Year’s Eve event is in the works. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see just how many people choose to ring in the New Year while playing Epic Games’ title with others as opposed to celebrating with more conventional methods in the real world.

Fortnite is available now for Android, iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
