Going with the theme of “Paradise,” Season 4 has brought a bunch of new things into the popular battle royale. Mechanics like Slide Kicking and items like the Port-a-Bunker have been introduced, as well as plenty of new items and abilities tied to the mysterious liquid Chrome that’s now spreading across the map. Along with all this and a new Battle Pass, Epic has kept its crossover streak going by bringing in the popular version of Gwen Stacy seen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with the skin boasting a subtle nod to the 2018 movie and its unique visual style.

Reddit user Danny4648 highlighted this in a comparison video focusing on a unique interaction between the Spider-Gwen skin and the new Arachrobatics emote. Normally the emote just has a player character perform a series of acrobatic flips and spins, but when Spider-Gwen does it, the character’s frame-rate drops and the animation gains a few unique flourishes like motion-smear effects. This perfectly mimics the distinct animation style of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it’s a neat callback to include in a skin/emote combination that fans may easily miss out on.

The Fortnite community seems to feel similarly, judging by the overall reaction to Danny4648’s video. Many comments praised all the unique details in Spider-Gwen’s Arachrobatics emote, and with rumors of Miles Morales coming to Fortnite, plenty of fans expressed hope that Into the Spider-Verse’s main protagonist will receive a similar treatment.

Into the Spider-Verse is unique for the ways it took inspiration from comic books and hand-drawn animation to create something that hasn’t really been seen before in a computer-animated movie. It’s understandable then that other Spider-Man games have referenced the film, with Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ Spider-Verse suit also recreating its crunchier animation and stylized aesthetic.

For the time being, Spider-Gwen’s appearance in Fortnite and Miles’ likely future inclusion will have to tide fans over while they wait for Into the Spider-Verse’s sequels. Although the next film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was delayed to June 2023, fans won’t have to wait as long for the second sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is slated to premiere in March 2024.

Fortnite is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
