Most changes to Fortnite are noticeable, but there has been one change that may have completely gone over some players’ heads, as it involves an item that a lot of them have likely never even found - the Golden Mushrooms.

For those who may not know, the Golden Mushrooms were added to the game at the beginning of the season but, unlike the Aquaman content, wasn’t heavily advertised, if mentioned at all. It’s believed that they only had a 0.001% chance of spawning, but anyone who did find one was heavily rewarded, as they granted 100 shield and could even be stacked in sets of three.
It’s because of their rarity that even those who did know of their existence may not have realized that Epic Games has now removed them from the game. This was only discovered by regular Fornite dataminer/leaker HYPEX, who explained that the item has been disabled with a hotfix.
Epic has provided no explanation for why it has done this or when the Golden Mushrooms will be added back, but HYPEX theorizes that it has to do with an issue some players had where they couldn’t pick them up. Considering how rare they are, managing to find one and then not be able to claim it would be extremely infuriating.
Neither the issue nor the removal of the item have been mentioned on the official Fortnite Trello board, which is where the team usually keep players up to date with any issues or changes, but hopefully players won’t have to wait too long for their return. Plus, with the golden mushrooms being so rare, their absence shouldn’t drastically affect the game much anyway.
In the meantime, players have other new additions to look forward to, such as more Aquaman content in the form of new skins, with one of them being of the villainous Black Manta.
This week also marks the fourth week of the season, which means there are new challenges to attempt. Anyone struggling can check out a short guide that provides tips on how to best complete them.
Fortnite is available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
